When we launched the Blue Ocean Session in 2021, the prevailing wisdom on Wall Street was that nobody wanted to trade US equities at 2 AM. The exchanges are now telling a different story: their own. Cboe, Nasdaq, and NYSE have each announced plans to extend trading deep into the night. Some have asked what that means for the firm that built the overnight market. Our answer is simple: we welcome it.
Validation, not displacement.
When the largest exchange operators in the world commit to overnight trading, they are confirming what our volumes have shown for five years: the demand is real, it is global, and it is growing. An overnight market with more venues is a bigger overnight market. In the day session, exchanges and ATSs have coexisted for decades, each serving distinct needs. The night will be no different.
We were first, and we’re still moving.
First-mover matters in market structure. Five years of overnight operations means five years of refining systems for the hours when the rest of the industry was dark: risk controls tuned to overnight conditions, a subscriber network spanning more than 30 countries, and relationships with the global brokers whose clients actually trade these hours. That experience is not replicated by extending a trading day. It is earned overnight by overnight.
The hours that remain ours.
The extended-hours models announced so far still leave gaps in the night; Nasdaq’s planned overnight session, for example, opens at 9:00 PM ET, a full hour after the trade date rolls at 8:00 PM. The Blue Ocean Session opens at 8:00 PM, historically one of the most active stretches of the night. We can confirm our intent to keep trading that hour, every day. And because the consolidated tape does not operate across the full overnight session, we would not expect our activity to appear on the SIP, which is why firms serious about overnight visibility subscribe to our proprietary data feeds, the primary record of overnight US equity price discovery.
Still just the beginning.
23/5 is a milestone for the industry, and we are glad to share the night. But the week still ends on Friday. The last frontier, the weekend, is only reachable through tokenized clearing, a path open to us and one we are actively building. The exchanges are catching up to 2021. We’re already working on 2027.
